Wilderness Act 60th Anniversary

Fall colors in Wrangle-St Elias National Park

3 Sept 2024

On this day, sixty years ago, President Lyndon Johnson penned into law the Wilderness Act, designating selected lands as places to be left undeveloped, where the processes of nature were unfettered and the land untrammeled.

In 1964, the National Wilderness Preservation System began as 54 wilderness areas across 13 states. Today, it has expanded to 806 areas in 44 states and Puerto Rico.

As we celebrate the passing of this historic Act, we sense our responsibility in shaping the future: what can we do today to support the preservation of the wilderness people will know through the next 60 years?
