Campsites

Bob Marshall Wilderness, MT: Conditions were assessed on 35 widely-distributed campsites in 1981. In 1990, 29 of these sites were reexamined. In 2002, 19 of these sites were reexamined.

Eagle Cap Wilderness, OR: One database has been developed from a study of 26 widely-distributed campsites that were first assessed in 1979. These sites were all reexamined in 1984 and 20 of them were assessed in 1990. All sites are being reexamined in 2005 and 2006.

A second dataset has been developed for all of the campsites in the drainages of the West Fork of the Wallowa River and Hurricane Creek (including most of the popular Lakes Basin). In 1975, all campsites were located. In 1990 and again in 2005 and 2006, all sites were located and rapid condition assessments were made. Rapid condition assessments for all the campsites around Mirror and Moccasin Lakes were also conducted in 1980.

Grand Canyon National Park Backcountry, AZ: Conditions were assessed on 24 widely-distributed campsites in 1984. These sites were all reexamined in 1989 or 1990 and 22 of them were reassessed in 2005.

Lee Metcalf Wilderness, MT: All of the campsites around many of the major lakes in the Spanish Peaks portion of the wilderness were assessed by Dr. Sid Frissell in 1972. These surveys were repeated in 1988 and again in 2004.

Salmon River in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, ID: In 1995 and 1996, a systematic sample of campsites (every tenth site) was taken on the Middle Fork (11 campsites) and Main Salmon (13 campsites) river segments. All sites were reassessed between 2001 and 2004.

San Rafael Wilderness, CA: In 1999, all of the campsites in a large portion of the San Rafael Wilderness were assessed.

Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, ID, MT: Starting in the mid-1970s, all of the campsites in three drainages in the Montana portion of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness were assessed. Campsites in these three drainages (Sweeney Creek, Big Creek and Bear Creek) were reassessed in 1989 and then again in 2001 and 2002.

A second dataset was developed for the Seven Lakes Basin in the Idaho portion of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. The Forest Service instituted an innovative program of impact confinement and restoration to reduce impacts in this lakes basin. Impacts were quantified in 1993 and in 1998.
