THE VALUE OF WILDERNESS WATER

The value of wilderness water project explores the benefits of water provided by wilderness and other protected areas. The values of renewable sources of clean water to humans include drinking water, irrigation, industrial uses, and many instream benefits. Clean water will only grow in its value to the nation and the world as populations increase and water quality is affected by development. Wilderness and many other protected areas are comprised of watersheds that have been minimally modified by human development. These areas provide abundant clean water to millions of people. Research on the value of this resource to future generations and its relationship to protected lands is crucial.

A pilot project was initiated to explore the relationship between wilderness water and societal benefits. The map below demonstrates the network of hydrographic features arising in Wilderness that contribute to a municipal area. Analysis such as this could be conducted to determine the value of wilderness water to humans and the environment.
