Wildlife Management Activities In Wilderness

Wildlife management activities occur in wildernesses throughout the United States. Some argue that the very concept of wilderness precludes any active management, including activities to manage wildlife. Others maintain that management practices in general and wildlife management activities in particular are needed to maintain or restore wilderness values. The following three efforts represent the Leopold Institute's attempt to understand this controversy.

  • Peter Landres and Shannon Meyer of the Leopold Institute, together with Sue Matthews of USFWS, published a provocative article concerning fish stocking and state versus federal wildlife management.

Landres, Peter; Shannon Meyer; Sue Matthews. 2001. The wilderness act and fish stocking: an overview of legislation, judicial interpretation, and agency implementation. Ecosystems 4(4): 287-295.
